Fear as information

How to tell a fear that protects from a fear that merely repeats, and what to do with each.

The idea

The usual advice about fear splits into two equally useless extremes: always obey it, or always ignore it. Fear is neither an order nor noise; it is information of varying quality. A precise fear — "I do not have the savings to cover six months" — points at a condition that can be worked on. A vague one — "I am not the kind of person who does this" — is almost never talking about the present. Telling them apart changes what happens next.

Where it comes from

From the conversation “Starting over halfway through”, episode 05 of the first season.

What Rolando observed

When someone says they are afraid, the first useful question is not where it comes from but how specific it is. Fears that can be finished in a complete sentence almost always point at something missing that can be obtained. The ones that cannot be finished are usually talking about an old idea about oneself.

Sample content. This observation was written to show the format. It does not come from Rolando López.

The strategy

  1. Write itPut the fear into a complete sentence. If you cannot finish it, you already know something.
  2. SharpenAsk what exactly you fear will happen, and when.
  3. SortDoes it point at a real missing condition, or repeat an old idea about you?
  4. RespondIf it points at a condition, turn it into a task. If it repeats an idea, find it an exception.
  5. ReviewCome back in a week and see whether the fear has changed shape.

Questions to sit with

  • What exactly do you fear will happen?
  • What would have to be true for that fear to be right?
  • What is this fear protecting, even if it limits you now?
  • What would you do if you knew you could correct course halfway?

One practical action

Write the fear that shows up most when you think about the change you are considering. Beside it, mark whether it is a missing condition or an idea about you.
